AVAILABLE ROLES

Both productions will feature an ensemble of 10 - 13 individuals. Minimum age is 10 years old, but there is no maximum.

Individuals cast in named roles in The Reluctant Dragon will be required to be in the ensemble of Amahl and the Night Visitors. Individuals cast in named roles in Amahl and the Night Visitors may opt out of the ensemble for The Reluctant Dragon.

The Reluctant Dragon

• The Boy - Any gender, age 10 - 13, soprano/mezzo (C4 to F5) - an imaginative, bookish shepherd's son who approaches the local dragon with curiosity rather than fear. Using his clever wits, he acts as a mediator to arrange a harmless, choreographed tournament that satisfies both the beast and the terrified villagers.

• The Dragon - Male, age 15+, tenor (B2 - F4) - a remarkably polite creature who subverts expectations by preferring poetry, fine dining, and an indolent lifestyle over terrorizing the countryside. A gentle pacifist at heart, he happily agrees to participate in a staged, non-lethal battle to preserve his quiet life. 

• St. George - Male, age 18+, baritone (A2 - E4) - a sensible knight who arrives to slay a monster but is relieved to find a thoroughly reasonable, poetry-loving gentleman instead. Displaying a flair for showmanship, he cooperates in a mock battle to pacify the town and officially declare the dragon reformed.

• Narrator - Any gender, age 18+, speaking only - the essential storyteller who guides the audience through this festive musical fable with warmth and wit. By bridging the gap between dialogue and song, this figure provides the crucial context that shapes the story's humorous charm.

Amahl and the Night Visitors

• Amahl - Male, age 10-14, boy soprano (B♭3 - A5) - a creative, imaginative, and disabled shepherd boy who is prone to telling tall tales, much to his mother's frustration. Despite his physical challenges and their deep poverty, his genuine generosity and pure heart ultimately lead him to offer his most precious possession as a gift to the Holy Child.

• The Mother - Female, age 28+, soprano or mezzo-soprano (A3 - G5) - a fierce, protective, and deeply impoverished widow who is driven to absolute desperation by the threat of her son starving. Though she momentarily succumbs to temptation by stealing gold from the sleeping kings, her profound love for Amahl and her deep faith lead her to a place of remorse and ultimate redemption.

• King Kaspar - Male, age 20+, tenor (D♭3 - A♭4) - one of the three visiting wise men who is notably eccentric, childlike, and profoundly deaf, often needing things repeated to him. He provides a wonderful element of comic relief while guarding a box filled with precious gems and exotic sweets that instantly captivate young Amahl.

• King Melchior - Male, age 20+, baritone (A3 - F4) - the noble, articulate, and deeply empathetic leader among the traveling monarchs. He serves as the primary spokesperson for the group, gently explaining the true spiritual purpose of their long journey and offering grace and understanding to Amahl's mother when she is caught stealing.

• The Page - Male, age 18+, any voice type (D♭3 - E4) - the loyal, protective, and hardworking servant who travels with the three kings to carry their heavy bundles and look after their needs. He acts with immediate, aggressive loyalty when he catches the Mother trying to steal the gold, fiercely defending his masters' treasures.
